Birds in the Store….Spring has Sprung at Splashwear!!!

Don’t you love spring?  After a long cold, gloomy winter…the new leaves on the trees, the flowers and the warmer weather?  I have to admit, as much as I love winter, spring is always such a welcome sight.

Of course, one of the sites we see in spring is momma birds busy building nests and caring for their babies.  What you don’t normally see is a swim shop owner caring for a wild baby bird….in her store!!  Well, that’s exactly what I’m doing.  I bring my new baby bird with me to work every day so I can feed him around the clock.  And today, he is super hungry!  I don’t know why he’s suddenly so hungry, but he is wanting to eat every few minutes!  It’s hard to get work done when I have to stop what I’m doing every 5 minutes or so to feed the little darling!

Okay…I know what you’re wondering….where did I get a wild baby bird?  Of course, I didn’t steal it from it’s nest…we found it and it’s mommy was long gone and I just couldn’t let him die….so…here I am….a bird mommy!  As I write this, he’s sitting next to me, tweeting quietly….maybe he’s finally going to take a nap!  Yup, it’s just like being a human mommy to human babies! (Well, that didn’t last long…I had to feed him AGAIN!!)

Anyway, back to the story.  Last weekend, to prepare for the upcoming summer at the lake, we took our boat from home to launch into the lake and park at our dock.  We drove it to the boat store for servicing and then to the lake to launch.  We took the boat cover off the boat and put the cover in the back of the truck. Then we drove the truck a few miles and got the cover back out of the truck and carried it to the lake to cover the boat back up to await our first summer boat ride.  As the hubby was trying to cover the boat, he noticed an inordinate amount of leaves and grass coming from the cover, so he shook it and out fell two brand new, tiny baby birds, with no feathers!  Since I am a bird lover, he brought them to me.  As soon as I saw them, my first reaction was to put them out of their misery….there was no way they would live long without their  mother.  But….it only took a minute for us to come to the conclusion, we could at least try to save them.  After all, I have hand fed baby birds before….how different could it be?  Right?

Well, I have never hand fed babies this tiny.  It took some trial and error, but now, I think we’re in our groove.  Unfortunately, one of the babies didn’t last….very sad, but we do have one very healthy, very loud and very tiny baby bird.  As you can see, he started off pretty sad looking, but everyday he gets more feathers and a definite personality!  His name is Larry.  Larry Bird J….that’s what you get when the hubby is a coach!  He has to be fed every few minutes during the day and his favorite place to be in our hands.  When we found him, we had no idea what kind of bird he was, but now I think he’s a Carolina Wren.  He will always be a tiny bird, with a big mouth!!  Both for eating and tweeting.

Yesterday was Easter, but because he has to be fed so often, I HAD to take him to church with me!  So, I put his little bowl in my purse, got a syringe full of baby bird food and off we went.  Now, he’s a “holy” baby bird.  Yes, he did sing in church, but no one noticed his voice was a little different!  As they always say, God loves all of our voices…so SING!!

So, if you’re in my neighborhood, come on by the store and meet Larry! I’m sure he’ll sing for you too!

Happy swimming and singing!

Jeannie

It’s LIFEGUARD Time!

Oh, the days of my youth, spent as a lifeguard at our local pool.  It was a great experience.  I learned so much by being a lifeguard.  But…things have changed, as they always do.  Of course, as most adults think, being a guard now, is so much easier than when I was teenager.  I’m sure I had to walk 10 miles to the pool, both ways, in knee deep snow!  Even in Arkansas summer!

I grew up in Jacksonville, Arkansas.  It was such a great place to be a kid.  Small enough to know everyone in town, but close to Little Rock and the Air Force Base, so we had everything we needed close by.  I loved it.  And, like many other kids, my favorite place in the summer was the local municipal pool.  We spent the whole summer there, swimming, visiting with friends and idolizing the lifeguards.  They were gods and goddesses to me!  I wanted to be one of them!  So, when I turned 15, I decided it was time to make that dream a reality.  I was a good swimmer, so I thought it was going to be a piece of cake……

I couldn’t have been more wrong!  Back then, in the early 70’s, lifeguards didn’t use rescue tubes.  We depended on our swimming ability, physical strength and knowledge of the rescue skills.  Taking the class was rigorous and difficult.  Our instructors told us on the first day that their job was to flunk us out of the class.  I guess that makes sense, since we were going to be responsible for people’s lives…..we needed to be GREAT lifeguards.  And, as he predicted, I did flunk the swim portion of the first class I took, just as everyone else in the class did.  It was brutal!  For our final exam, we had a long written test to complete, which was okay.  I passed that…but the rescue part was almost impossible to pass.  Our rather large male instructor was the victim we rescued.   He tried to drown each and every one of us, and he could have.  It was a rough day, to say the least!

But, I took the class again and knowing what to expect, I passed with no problems.

So, on to my three years as a lifeguard at Jacksonville Municipal Pool.

Being a lifeguard, I saw the pool from a completely different view.  It was no longer just the place to hang out with my friends and wile away the hot summer days.  No, now it was my job.  I enjoyed being there, but the weight of the responsibilities I held was daunting.  It was never far from my mind.  Even when the lifeguards would have contests, like how many kids we could sit out around our lifeguard stand, we knew what we were doing there was serious.  We were there to save lives, and we all had to put our skills to use.

Luckily, we never had a serious injury in my years there.  I guess that impossible guard training was exactly what we needed!  We were great lifeguards!

So, it’s that time of year again.  Now, when lifeguard season rolls around, I let the memories wash over me and smile…but what I really focus on is helping my customers with their guard supplies and lifeguard suits!  When I was lifeguarding, we wore whatever we wanted, but most pools now have a uniform, or at least a color they like.  Splashwear can help you will all of your guard needs.  We have lots of styles of guard suits, both male and female.  We can do custom suits for your pool, or just off the rack.  Our guard suit prices range from $20.00 up to $80.00. We also have all the equipment you will need; from rescue tubes and visors to backboards and umbrellas.  If your pool needs it, we’ll find it for you!

If you want your guards to buy their suits individually, I can set up a page on my website with your pool’s required items there and your guards can log in and purchase exactly what you want them to have at your discount!  We try to make as easy for you as possible!

Okay…so here we go….summer is on the way…..time for YOUR great lifeguard season!

It’s Friday!  Hooray!!  It’s going to be a gorgeous weekend in Arkansas!  We really need it after a long, cold winter.  Well, I know to those of you farther north, our cold is probably mild to you…but…what can I say…we have thin blood here!  So, anyway, this gorgeous weekend is just a taste of what’s to come.  Lake weather!  Spending weekends at the lake is pretty common here and we love it.  I adore days on the boat, eating at lakeside restaurants, lounging in the water, gazing at so many stars at night, roasting marshmallows by the campfire….it’s just heaven to me.  I have to thank my late father for designing and building a wonderful lake house to leave to his child and grandkids.  It is a wonderful gift that will keep giving for generations.  So, because of the impending warmer weather, I decided it was time for a change and got a hair cut!

Which reminds me of hair care when you swim!  It’s so important to take care of your hair and skin before and after your workout!  We carry lots of chlorine eliminating products to help with that.  From shampoos and conditioners like UltraSwimTriSwim and Reflect H2O, to body lotions, body washes, Swim Spray and Suit Cleaners.

Reflect H2O also has a pre-swim product that you can apply to your hair before you swim either in chlorine or salt water that will protect your hair from the effects of the water and sun.  My daughter, a former competitive swimmer and now a dolphin trainer at SeaWorld, swears by it!  And her hair proves how great this product is!  It’s healthy, silky and soft.  When she comes home, she always takes several bottles back to Florida with her!

DermaSwimPro is a pre-swim lotion that you can apply to your skin to keep the chlorine off your skin completely!  It makes you super slippery and works like a charm.  I have lots of customers who love it!

Swim Spray is a relatively new product that it based on citrus extracts and it neutralizes the chlorine.  This is to be used after you get out of the water and before you shower.  It can be used on your hair and body.

If you are having problems with your hair from the effects of chlorine and/or salt and sun I have a few tips for you:

1. Of course, use high quality chlorine out products before and after you swim.

2. Wear a cap!  Even though you hair may still get wet, having that protection is key!

3. Wash your hair as soon as you get out of the water.  This tip is critical. Don’t let the chlorine or salt water dry in your hair.  Get it out before it dries!

Swimsuits don’t have to be washed.  The manufacturers recommend that you rinse your suit in cool water and hang to dry.  They do not recommend you machine wash suits or use any detergent on suits, but instead, if you feel they need to be washed, you need to use a swimsuit cleaner designed for swimsuits.  We have those!  I personally recommend that you soak your suit in a sink with a capful of Speedo Swimsuit Cleaner, then hang to dry.   That will keep you suit in tip top shape.

So, that’s all for today!  I hope you have a fantastic weekend at home, the lake, the beach or where ever this great weekend takes you!

Happy Swimming!

What are RANGS, you ask?  Well, I’ll get to that in a minute….first, lets talk about famous customers!  Being the only competitive swim shop in Arkansas, I occasionally get a local celebrity come in the door and it’s always a treat for me!  Today, a retired Arkansas politician came in to pick up his RANGS.  He had been waiting for them for about a month….I finally got my shipment in and he was excited to get them!

You know, you watch these important figures on TV and they are always serious and business-like and bigger than life.  Especially, those that make decisions that impact all of us.  But…when they are here, they are just regular people….Often they show up on their way home from the pool and they may have on workout clothes or have wet hair.  They may need help choosing their goggles or swimsuit and they often want advice on equipment or even stroke technique or workouts.  All of sudden, I feel pretty important!

Not bad for a small business owner!

Most of these celebrities are pretty down to earth, but I do have one customer who insists on being called by his title.  He is a nationally recognized politician and when he calls the store he always refers to himself by his title and complete name.  In this day of casualness, it sounds so odd!  But, he is a really nice guy and I love visiting with him.  Occasionally, he will send his assistant to pick things up for him and it ALWAYS freaks them out when I hand them a Speedo brief.  They are obviously not swimmers!  I guess they just can’t imagine their boss in a teeny tiny Speedo!

Seeing these local political figures, I often wonder if I should just keep the conversation to swimming, or can I ask about the issues?  I usually, just keep it to swimming…..I assume they need time off too.  It must be hard to live in a fishbowl all of the time.

Okay, so I said I would tell you about RANGS.  They are a great American made product!  They are pull buoys that you attach to your leg instead of holding a pull buoy between your legs.  The inventor, Steve Freiderang (hence the name RANGS) is a coach and swim product inventor in California.  He is constantly looking for ways to make swimmers work better and go faster.  He has tons of inventions and Splashwear is his premier dealer….not bad for a little tiny swim shop in Arkansas!  Anyway, here is a brief description of his RANGS in his words:

“This is a new type of pull buoy system that is easy to use and does not fall off.  They are great for all strokes and fasten with Velcro.  You can develop upper body strength without worrying about sacrificing rhythm or your technique.  You can focus on pulling and not on keeping your legs squeezed together.  They encourage long-axis rotation and develop proper swimming angles and balance of stroke.”

Steve also has many other swimming inventions and is dedicated to helping all swimmers perform at their peak.  Working with Steve is like dealing with a whirling dervish….all energy!

If you have any questions about RANGS just call me at the store…I’ll be happy to help!

Come in and see me….You can be a famous customer, or at least I’ll treat you like one!

Happy Swimming!

Today was a great day at Splashwear.  I got to visit with some great new customers (teaser) and help several teams with their team orders.  So, I'll make you wait on the news about the new customers.....that comes in a minute!!

Most of the day I took orders and worked on custom suits designs for teams.  I love designing suits.  It scratches my artistic itch!  I've always been creative and designing suits is right up my alley!  I spend a lot of time with all of my vendors but one of Splashwear's specialties is.....Q Swimwear custom team suits!  They are incredible.  Such cute suits!!  And so unique.  Getting a custom suit is a great option for any team!  There are a few different companies that make custom suits, but in my opinion...Q is, by far, the best!

I love dealing with Q.  Their number one concern is making the customer happy...and that's pretty major!  I deal with vendors every day and most of them are good, but Q is incredible!  I always know that they will go above and beyond the call of duty to make me and my customer completely satisfied!  I love working with them!  Now...you might wonder what the big deal is....well, when you get a custom suit, you can have it designed to be completely unique...a suit no one else will have!  And, you can get that same print forever!  When you buy a print suit off the rack, you  can only get the suit for a two years at the most...then they are discontinued.  Q's suits are made of polyester so they last a long time.  Don't worry about sizing....I have sizing kits!

Aren't these great!  You are only limited by your imagination!  What could be better than that!?
Anyway....that is how I spend most of my day.  I helped several teams with custom suits...these are just two!

Now....for the big news!  I also got to visit with a long time customer....he coaches a YMCA team in Arkansas.  He brought in his wife and their new additons.... two adorable little adopted daughters.  They are precious.  The 5 year old will be swimming on Daddy's swim team this summer.  That is so exciting!  I'm so happy for them.  Their little family went from just a couple of two to a family of 4!  And such a wonderful familly they have!  Lucky parents and lucky little girls....and now I know I have two more long time customers!!  :)

Happy Swimming!

Let me know your good news!!

Is this how your desk looks?  I heard that Einstein had a messy desk, so I'm going with it!  Well, at least that's my excuse.  This is where I spend my workdays, filling orders, paying bills, ordering, receiving, paying taxes, payroll, talking to customers, designing custom team swimsuits and whatever else needs to be done!  Ahhhh...the life of a business owner!  I tell my husband that I'm a fireman....I spend all day putting out fires...You know what I mean......"Johnny needs  tech suit YESTERDAY!!"  Those are the worst for me, because I really want to make my customers happy and I stress until I get them what they want WHEN they want it!  But...don't get me wrong....I'm not complaining....we ALL have stressful jobs...this is just mine and I love it!  I feel so blessed to have this business.  It has been good to me and swimmers, swim parents/grandparents are the best customers anywhere!  No, I really mean it!  Swimming is such a great sport, so those involved are great too!  I'll just continue to put out those fires...with a smile on my face! :)

As for today....well, it's pretty slow in the store right now, so Kara and I caught up with all our adventures from this weekend, then got busy.  I filled orders while she hung up new Lifeguard suits.  And, the new Dolfin Uglies are in...they are always so cute.  It amazes me that they continue to come up with cute new prints every season.  They are adorable!  We also put a LOT of great suits in the Grab Bag bins...so if you need practice suits, we gotcha covered.  Come by the store for a great selection.  Oh...I also designed a new Q Custom team suit for the Magnolia Dolphins Summer League Siwm Team in Magnolia, Arkansas.  The suit adorable and they really like it!

As for the rest of the day...well it's time to do my bookkeeping and go home.  Now, don't get me wrong...just because I'm going home doesn't mean my work day is over...Oh noooo....I will work through the night as I'm watching tv or at my pottery class, I'm constantly responding to emails and inquiries.  It never really ends...but as I said, I love it and wouldn't have it any other way!

So....this is my life, Welcome to it!  Feel free to post your thoughts or questions and I'll respond!

Happy Swimming and....

Keep a Messy Desk!

Even if you’re not a competitive swimmer, proper nutrition is the foundation of good health and ensures adequate performance both on the job – and in the gym or pool.

The best place to go for detailed meal plans for athletes would be a sports dietitian or nutritionist who is licensed in your state and has credentialed expertise in that field. An example would be a certified sports dietitian or CSSD. They can provide a customized plan based on you or your swimmer’s needs, and can answer any questions you may have.

While some personal trainers attempt to provide nutritional advice, it’s important to note that they’re stepping outside of the realm of their expertise and education when they do that. Most of them had very minimal hours of ‘training’ in that arena to get certified, and their goals or their client’s goals, are very different from that of a swimmer or average person. They simply don’t have the depth of knowledge a dietitian would.
